American Sign Language (ASL)

American Sign Language (ASL) is a foreign language used right here in the United States by millions of Deaf individuals! Learning ASL will give you the training and knowledge-base to be culturally and linguistically more sensitive to the deaf and hard of hearing population which totals more than 32 million people in the US. And the best part…ASL is now accepted by the University of Missouri to fulfill foreign language requirements for any student!

ASL courses are taught by Stephanie Logan. She is the executive director of The L.E.A.D. (Leadership through Education and Advocacy for the Deaf) Institute, which is a non-profit agency that provides mental health services and statewide support to Deaf and Hard of Hearing victims of crime. Stephanie is also a doctoral student in Counseling Psychology program. She became deaf 15 years ago as a result of contracting spinal meningitis. She attended Gallaudet University to learn ASL and has been studying the linguistics of ASL for many years. She has been teaching ASL in the community for 10 years and has been teaching ASL at MU for almost 4 years. Winter Semester ASL Opportunities:

American Sign Language classes Levels 1-4 will be offered winter semester.

For ASL Levels 1-4, there are two classes students are required to enroll in. The two classes combine to make a 5-credit hour course.

ASL I

The ASL 1 class meets on T/TH/F from 3-3:50 (you will have your actual "class" on these days with the course instructor, Stephanie Logan) and on M/W you will have lab from 3-3:50. What actually happens in lab is that during the first week you will pick either Mondays or Wednesdays to have your "structured lab" that will be taught by the course TA (the class is split into 2 labs because generally there are 40 students enrolled in ASL 1). So, if you choose Mondays then you will not have lab on Wednesdays.  However, during the first week of classes you will also pick your one time during the week when you will have your "on your own" lab. You will have assignments to complete in the ASL lab located in the Reflector located in Townsend Hall on the 2nd floor during your “own your own” lab time each week.
As these courses are 5-credit hours, you will need to register as follows for each of the levels:

ASL 1 reference number:
Reference #23990 (undergraduate) - 3 credit hours
